Here are some wonderful poems written by some very talented greyhound lovers!!  We thought they we fantastic
and summed up what it was like to own a greyhound!
We thought we'd share them with you (with the poets permission, of course!)
If there are any more poets out there we would love to read your poems or thoughts and put them on the site for

The Noble Greyhound

If you've ever owned a greyhound no other dog will do
The vast rewards that lie in store are waiting just for you
Affection comes from the bottom of the heart
From the day he arrives 'til the day he departs
Something special happens, he knows he's found a friend
And the love that's lavished on you is with you 'til the end

The days when he raced were so full of pride
Not knowing then he'd be just cast aside
You've helped a doomed creature whose use is no more
And the life left behind him has shut like a door
He cannot perform as he did in the past
But a home and some kindness is now his at last

He stands tall and noble, bright eyes check the scene
From birth til death  his life is tough, except for you in between
When, if he's really lucky, a person just like you
Will take him home and love him - well, what else can you do?

Greyhound Comfort

There's nothing I like better than a run out in the car
A cushion on the back seat is more comfortable by far
Than pounding down the pavements and along the country lanes
Energy is wasted when there's nothing to be gained
I may be sleek and sporty but am lazy truth be known
I'd rather lie back in my car and chew a tasty bone
I can watch the other doggies from my vantage point within
Safe in the knowledge - all is well - I'm going for a spin!!

Ivor - well........ just being Ivor!
Maxie
Georgie the Greyhound

It's hard to be a guard dog when I really want to laze
But the building which I live in is nothing but a maze
I protect and watch the old folk within these sainted walls
If I wasn't here there'd sure to be more accidents and falls

Everyone adores me - they save me little treats
I have to be polite to them accepting cakes and meats
Sometimes the food is out of date but not by very much
I haven't come to any harm 'cos I smell before I touch!

I'm included in the parties, the trips and all the fuss
My contribution, without a doubt, is nothing but a must
I've been known to blot my copy book when, out of my control
I've spied a plate containing an abandoned sausage roll!

I remember one occasion when we went to see the lights
A coach containing pensioners whose spirits hit the heights
We thundered up the motorway - for Blackpool we were bound
The guest of honour in the back was Georgie - their Greyhound!

The lives of all have been enhanced, of that I can be sure
Not one to blow my trumpet but I could tell you more
I know that I've been naughty but it adds spice to your life
Something else to think about and thus forget your strife.

Basil contemplating what to get up
to next with Charlie!
Murphy having a nap
Annie running on the beach
When a Dog Waits

You've gone to the shops, I await your return
Now what can I do with an hour to burn?
I'll look through the window, survey my terrain
There's a cat from next door, oh it's started to rain

The bed looks inviting, I might take a nap
The phone won't stop ringing - I'll have to stop that
Where does this turn off, this infernal machine
All a dog wants is to lie down and dream

Sleep now eludes me, I'll have to change that
It's back to the window, now where is that cat?
He won't look so smug when I'm out and about
What a run for his money as he dives up our spout

I hear a car engine approach from the west
In my efforts to greet you I land on my chest
Smashed items around me - I hope you're not mad
It's just that I've missed you, you're back - I'm so glad!

Maxie wondering just when this creature is going
to move over and give him some more sofa space!
Little Molly - waiting!
A promise between friends

I can't promise I'll be calm
When all i want to do is play
I can't promise I'll sit still
When you ask for me to stay
I can't promise i wont sulk
When no is what you shout
I can't promise I'll be patient
When the biscuit tin comes out
I can't promise that I'll always sleep
When the stars shine up above
Yet one thing I CAN promise you
Is my forever love.
